Retro sweets are all the rage. Entire candy shops are popping up featuring tastes of the past, with candies like Lemon Heads, Necco Wafers, candy buttons and Gold Mine gum. Nothing brings back memories, or introduces new ones, like something as sweet and comforting as candy. Not just kids love sweet confections!
Nostalgia is something everyone loves, and even adults can go crazy with candy from their childhood. Decade by decade features treats that signify the time, and once someone sees something she enjoyed as a kid, memories come flooding back. For the 1950's think about Abba Zabba's and Clark bars, in the 60's were Razzles and Zots. Who could forget the 1970's and Space Food Sticks and Pop Rocks? There is probably not a person who does not remember their mom or dad saying, "Back when I was a kid..," and now with candy, parents can share their long ago favorite with their kids.
With all the new treats constantly being created and the old ones being updated, it is nice to see an old classic still hanging around. Often some of it has an interesting history, like the fact that M & M's were originally created for soldiers so the sweet shell could prevent the chocolate from melting. Some of these sweets are still easy to find, but a lot of it can only be found in specialty stores or online. Even television shows, like the Food Network's Unwrapped, feature old fashioned sweets and retro favorites.
Just like fashion or soda cans, retro sweets tell a story and signify a time now gone. To find something enjoyed as a child brings back history and innocence, and it can give a little comfort to a busy world. Soon enough, candy now will be considered retro, and kids in the future will be enjoying current favorites as retro sweets.
